What is Jolt?

Jolt is an online business school that exists to transform people’s careers through education, and change their lives. Founded in Israel, we’ve been training people for over 5 years across hubs in Israel and the UK. Our training is delivered by innovators from some of the world’s most successful companies including Google, Uber, Facebook, Amazon, Fiverr, Microsoft & more.

What is Kickstart?

Kickstart is a £2 billion work placement scheme launched by the Chancellor in his Plan for Jobs. At its heart, it offers young people 6-month work placements, with the Government footing the bill.

The Kickstart Scheme provides funding to employers to create new 6-month job placements for young people who are currently on Universal Credit and at risk of long-term unemployment.

This is part of the government’s Plan for Jobs and aims to create hundreds and thousands of new, fully funded jobs across England, Scotland and Wales.

When does Kickstart start?

We’re signing up employers now, ahead of the launch and first placements becoming available from November. The scheme will run throughout the rest of the year and 2021, in 6-month work placement blocks.

How is Jolt’s Kickstart different from the first version launched by the Government?

Jolt is partnering with the Government and the UK tech industry to deliver a bespoke version of the Government’s Kickstart scheme - specifically created to suit the needs of the sector. Jolt has developed a flexible version of the policy which gives young people the skills and training they need to thrive in a high-growth company, but also gives employers the confidence that they’ll get the right people for their business.

We will provide a bespoke 3-week intensive training course in commercial business, tech and employability skills for the first stage of the Kickstart programme, which will be followed by a 5-month work placement, fully-funded by the Government, during which time Jolt will continue to provide support and mentoring.

What kind of training do the Kickstarters get?

Our Kickstart programme will include over 75 hours of intensive online training delivered by Jolt for each candidate over the first month. The live online training will be based on a bespoke curriculum that Jolt has created, split into four key areas:

  • Becoming an effective Sales Development Representative  
  • Providing exceptional Customer Service and learning Customer Retention strategies
  • Understanding and succeeding in the tech ecosystem
  • How to be successful and add value in the workplace
What happens after the first month?

Once the candidate has completed the 3-week training with Jolt, they will start their work placement with the employer that has interviewed and accepted them in advance. The Kickstarter will complete a 5-month work placement during which Jolt will continue to provide mentoring and constant access to support online through digital channels like a dedicated Slack group.

How many Kickstarters do I have to commit to taking?

There is no minimum number of Kickstarters you need to commit to. Jolt will be acting as the administrator for the tech companies that sign up, allowing any firm - big or small - to participate.  We recommend that employers offer at least two placements so that each Kickstarter has a buddy throughout the programme, however this is not a necessity.

Will I get to interview and choose the Kickstarters I get?

Yes - Jolt will be able to match Kickstart candidates to companies and companies based on your criteria. Jolt will manage the initial screen process, and then you will get to interview any candidates you would like to speak to based on the selection we offer you.

We’re committed to making sure that employers get the right kind of talent, and that young people receive the right kind of training before they start their placement.

How is the scheme financed?

Under the scheme, the Government will fund each Kickstart placement with a cap of £6,800, broken down as follows:

  • £1,500 to fund Jolt’s month-long training programme in advance of Kickstart work placements as well as their on-going support of the Kickstarter whilst on site.
  • £300 to the employer to support with associated capital and/or administrative costs of onboarding new starters.
  • £5,000 to fund the relevant National Minimum Wage for 25 hours a week, associated employer National Insurance contributions and employer minimum automatic enrolment contributions, for the duration of the six month scheme.

This funding will be paid to Jolt, with the relevant payments passed to the company to fund the young person’s salary in arrears.

I am a Living Wage Employer, can I top up the Kickstarter’s salary?

Yes, you can top up the Kickstarter’s salary at your discretion. Any top up will need to be funded by the employer directly.

Can I offer the Kickstarter more than 25 hours a week?

Yes, you can offer more than 25 hours a week. This increase in hours will need to be reflected in the Kickstarter’s wages, and covered by the employer.

Are there any restrictions on what kind of businesses can sign up?

Any tech business, regardless of size or location across England, Scotland and Wales can participate in the scheme as long as the placements they offer comply with the following conditions:

  • The roles should not replace existing or planned vacancies.
  • The role should not cause existing employees or contractors to lose or reduce their employment.
  • Be a minimum of 25 hours per week, for 6 months. Jolt will provide 3 weeks of training at the beginning of those 6 months for 25 hours per week.
  • Be paid at least the National Minimum Wage for their age group (the cost of which will be covered by the Government).
Do all applications get approved?

Once you've submitted your roles to Jolt as the Gateway they then go through the Government's approval process. In the Department for Work and Pensions tips for making a successful application they state you are more likely to be approved if they:

  • Have a credit score which is a low risk category
  • Have a low probability of imminent business failure
  • Have enough liquid assets to pay debts
  • Do not have any recent county court judgments (CCJs).
Do the roles need to be offered in a physical office environment?

In line with the Government’s current advice, we recommend that any Kickstart work placements are offered remotely, where possible. Please specify if you have a requirement for your placements to be in an office, and we will make sure that you receive Kickstarters who are able and willing to travel to your premises.

What do I need to do to sign up?

  • How many Kickstarters you would like to take on
  • Tell us what types of roles you will be offering under the scheme
  • Let us know if you’d like to be involved in the publicity and launch of this programme

What’s a Rich Text element?

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
